Historically Witch Bottles were used in Folk Magic for protection against magic that had been cast against the user of the bottle. Containing the victim's urine, hair, and later pins, the bottle were then buried at the furthest edge of a property; or into a wall or fireplace inside the house. Witch Bottles were made from stoneware pottery glazed with with salt, and then later glass or vials. The description of the practice is first mentioned in Joseph Glanvill’s Saducismus Triumphatus, or Evidence concerning Witches and Apparitions, published in 1681. Many are still found to this day when renovations in old houses unearth them from walls and fireplaces.
