Before Christianity, the darkest time of the year was observed as the celebration of Yule. A time of very overt supernatural themes such as the Wild Hunt, (defined at the ghostly procession across the winter sky), the ‘Drauger’ the undead revenant creatures who walk the earth during the winter; and also other winter specters such as Woden’s Hunt, Gabriel's Hounds, and the king of the Underworld Gwyn ap Nudd, and the hounds of Annwn. From this era also comes the ‘Redolent of Denmark’, a story featuring a Christmas Revenant. The story, discovered on a manuscript was titled by Medieval Scholar and Christmas Ghost Story writer M.R.
