Tree ornament inspired by the 1840 tale of a girl whilst going to a New Years ball, refused the advice of her mother, to wear more than just her ball gown and froze to death on the way. The newspaper report and subsequent poem by Elizabeth Oakes Smith, were both titled ‘A Corpse Going to a Ball’. The folklore surrounding the story is that small porcelain dolls were then bought for Victorian children as a moral lesson to play with. The dolls being named Frozen Charlotte’s. The poem was republished in 1843, where it became more widely known.
While this folklore is probably not true, and originates from the 1940’s, this tree ornament celebrates the folklore and the Victorian tales of Winter and Christmas ghosts and the macabre.
