This bottle is influenced by real historical medicine.
While originating in the ancient world with humour theory, blood was believed to contain the vital spirit. In a very vampiric sense, the transferring of blood will transfer this life force.Blood was further believed to be a medical marker of health, especially in the 17th century, where this apotropaic transference of blood could heal the afflicted. For those suffering from leprosy, rabies, jaundice, gout, consumption and cancers, English Paracelsean surgeon Christopher Irvine recorded in the 17th century the use of blood eggs, or the ‘true Mumia of Paracelsus’. By filling a jar with your blood, this blood would be poured into an egg shell, where it would be placed among other chicken eggs for two weeks. The egg would then be cracked open, mixed with bread, and fed to an animal. Through this medical and apotropaic folk belief, your illness was believed to then be transferred out of your body.
