Frogs and toads were also thought to be medically potent. Recipes exist such as the dried hind leg of a toad, placed in a silk bag which would cure scrofula, a form of tuberculosis known as the 'King's Evil'.It was also believed that you could be cured by the touch of a King, but if you couldn't get a King to touch you, then the toad leg would have to do.

The rest of the toad could also be used, by utilizing the corresponding part of the toad to the part of the body afflicted. As with all forms of apotrophaic folk medicine, burning to ash was also deemed beneficial. The burnt ash of a toad is a noted historical cure for rheumatism, especially is the dust is placed in green silk, and worn around the neck.

In the 17th Century, the same ash was sold as "toad powder", believed to be a powerful medical charm in fighting off contagion, especially in regard to small pox, and dropsy.
