The dark tale Thomas Johannes Baptist Schwytzer, also known as the Werewolf of Morbach.  Deserting Napoleon's army during the disastrous invasion of Russia in 1812, Schwytzer joined other deserters to form a gang of thieves raiding the Rhineland Palatinate region in what was then Prussia.

Killing the inhabitants of a farmhouse, Schwytzer was cursed, where ever full moon, he would transform into a Werewolf. Finally killed by the inhabitants of Morbach, they built a shrine with a candle which as long as it burned would keep the Werewolf from returning.

In 1988, US servicemen at the Hahn Air force Base in Morbach claimed that the perimeter fence was breached by a huge wolf creature, seven to eight feet tall.
