These little plaster plaques depict famous pirates and their famous flag ships. Ching Shih also known as Jihng Sih; ‘widow of Zheng Yi’, (1775–1844) was one of the most powerful pirates in history. Challenging the British, Portuguese and the Qing dynasty in China in the early 19th century, she commanded over 300 junks (an ancient Chinese sailing vessel/ship design still in use today) manned by 20,000-40,000 pirates named the Red Flag Fleet,. Remaining undefeated, she would become one of only a few pirate captains to retire from piracy. In 1810, amnesty was offered to all off the Red Flag Fleet pirates due to the inability of the British, Portuguese and the Qing dynasty navies to defeat her. Accepting amnesty with all the loot she had acquired in her raids, she died in 1844, at the age of 69. Original illustration.
