These skull boxes are influened by those that can be found in the ossuary in the church of Saint-Hilaire in the village of Marville in Lorraine, France. Ossuaries (from the Latin meaning bone) are containers, typically boxes where bones or skulls were placed for display after they were removed from graves after a period of time. Ossuaries were used in areas where burial sites became scarce, and by reusing the burial grounds where able to store thousands of remains in boxes in place of coffin burials. Memento mori’, (remember that you have to die), is the Medieval Latin theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.
