An ancient herb associated with the supernatural and divine qualities, Verbena was named "tears of Isis" in ancient Egypt, and "Hera's tears" in ancient Greece, were it was placed upon Roman altars dedicated to Jupiter. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder, describes Verbena as being two plants, one female and one male. It was also noted in antiquity for its ability to induce sleep.Early Christian folklore states that Verbena was used upon the wounds suffered by Jesus after his execution by crucifixion, as such it was known in the medieval period as 'Devil's Bane', and said to possess supernatural qualities to ward off evil.
