King: Louis XVI (23 August 1754 – guillotined Paris 21 January 1793). Inspired by the centuries growing radical idea and the financial conditions of the poor, the French Revolution from 1789 until 1799 saw the end of absolute monarchy in France, the terror of the guillotine, the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte and a global conflict that extended from the Caribbean to the Middle East. These headless portraits testify to the juxtaposition of ideals and brutality seen during the period. Louis XVI (23 August 1754 – 21 January 1793), known as Louis Capet during the French revolution, was King of France from 1774 until his deposition in 1792. His reign was marked by debt and financial crisis which culminated in unpopularity, abolition of the monarchy and eventual execution on 21 January 1793. Louis XVI is the only King of France ever to be executed, and his death brought an end to more than a thousand years of continuous French monarchy.
