‘Wuthering Heights’ written by Emily Bronte under the pseudonym of Ellis Bell was written between October 1845 and June 1846, it was published in 1847. Her only novel, the story was considered controversial during its inception due to the lurid depictions of cruelty, religious hypocrisy, gender inequality, and social class, between the two chief characters of Cathy and Heathcliff, and the destructive effects of jealousy, love and vengefulness between them. The story highlighted the underbelly of a Victorian society which shielded itself behind strict ideals of perceived morality. Emily Bronte died a year after the novel was published at the age of 30.
