‘Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus’ was written by the English novelist, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851). The daughter of the political philosopher William Godwin, and feminist pioneer Mary Wollstonecraft; Mary Shelley was also the wife of the romantic poet Percy Shelley. The story of the creation of a grotesque but inquiring reanimated creature from unorthodox scientific experiments by Victor Frankenstein, is cited as the first science fiction story, and was influenced by the 18th century themes of early scientific inquiry, and the topics of galvanism and the occult. Mary Shelley wrote this story as part of the horror story contest that was held with, Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and William Polidori, during the summer of 1816.
