Belladonna was used historically both as a poison and beauty aid, its name meaning "beautiful lady" is associated with its use in small doses during the Renaissance to enlarge the pupils, and was used as such by Italian women to appear more seductive.
The practice though was a dangerous one, and the wrong dosage would result in death.
